UNDERSTANDING THE BASICS

HOW DOES INVISALIGN WORK?

Invisalign is an alternative to braces. Instead of correcting your teeth using metal brackets and wires, it uses a series of “aligners” which look similar to retainers or night guards for teeth grinding.

‍Each set of aligners is built to move your teeth slightly. Over time, your smile will be corrected by switching through multiple sets of aligners. Once your treatment from our Stamford dentists
is complete, your smile will look straight, even and beautiful.

WHAT TO EXPECT

THE INVISALIGN TREATMENT PROCESS

The process begins with a consultation at Clear Smile Dental Studio. Dr. Park or Dr. Kwon will examine your mouth and ensure that you are a good candidate for Invisalign. Then, our team will take impressions and images of your teeth. Dr. Park or Dr. Kwon will work with Invisalign to build your treatment plan and create your aligners.

You’ll come back to our Stamford dental office in a few weeks to get your first few sets of aligners. Each set will be worn for about 2 weeks, for 20-22 hours per day.

You will come in for regular appointments every 6 weeks to get your next several sets of aligners, and a quick checkup to ensure you are tracking. This same basic process will be repeated until your treatment is complete.

WHY INVISALIGN?

BENEFITS OF INVISALIGN TREATMENT

Invisalign has a number of benefits. First, it’s nearly invisible when worn, so your appearance and self-confidence will not be affected. Invisalign is also more comfortable than braces, since it has no metal parts to irritate or poke your mouth. You can also remove it to eat and drink, and to brush and floss. This means you don’t have to worry about changing your diet, and it’s easier to care for your teeth properly.

 WHAT’S RIGHT FOR ME?

INVISALIGN VS. BRACES

Invisalign can be used for most minor-to-moderate orthodontic issues. Unfortunately, it’s not the best choice for severe orthodontic issues like extremely crooked or crowded teeth, or major bite problems. In these cases, braces are usually a better choice. They are more versatile and powerful for treating patients who have more serious orthodontic needs.

‍Not sure which treatment is right for you? At Clear Smile Dental Studio, Dr. Park or Dr. Kwon can provide you with an Invisalign consultation in Stamford, and help you learn everything you need to know about this treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WILL I EXPERIENCE DISCOMFORT WHEN I FIRST GET INVISALIGN?

Overall, Invisalign from Clear Smile Dental Studio in Stamford tends to be a lot more comfortable than braces. The pressure on your teeth is more gentle and even, and there are no pointy metal components to poke or irritate your lips, cheeks, or tongue.

However, this doesn’t mean that Invisalign treatment will be completely free of any pain or discomfort. Just like any other orthodontic treatment, this treatment will cause your teeth to move, which can cause some discomfort as they adjust to their new position.

When you first start wearing Invisalign, you may experience some discomfort due to this. In addition, excessive salivation is common for a few days after you begin wearing your aligners. This will go away after your mouth gets used to the presence of your Invisalign aligners in your mouth.

Whenever you switch to a new set of aligners, it’s common to experience some discomfort for a day or two. You can take over-the-counter medicine like aspirin or ibuprofen to help with this. Drinking cold water can also help with the discomfort.

Some patients use Invisalign “chewies,” which are small, cylinder-shaped chewables made of a special type of foam, to help with discomfort. Chewing them and putting pressure on your teeth can help you get relief, and also helps you fit a new set of aligners onto your teeth properly.

  • HOW LONG DO I NEED TO WEAR INVISALIGN EACH DAY?

You need to wear your Invisalign aligners for at least 20 hours per day, and it’s best to wear them for 22+ hours per day for the best results. The more consistently you wear your aligners, the more likely it is that you will complete your treatment on time, and without any complications, delays, or other issues.

Our Stamford dental team suggests removing your aligners only when you eat or drink (except water), and when you brush and floss your teeth. You also can remove your aligners to do a few other things like play musical instruments, such as brass or woodwinds, or to play sports or to exercise.

However, make sure that you wear them for at least 20 hours per day, or it’s likely that your treatment will fall behind schedule.

  • WHAT IF I'VE HAD BRACES OR OTHER DENTAL TREATMENT IN THE PAST?

If you’ve had braces in the past, but you’re not satisfied with how your teeth look or they moved because you didn’t wear your retainer after treatment, Invisalign is actually a perfect solution for you. With Invisalign, you can correct your smile quickly with subtle, invisible aligners, and get your smile back.

Other dental treatments usually won’t affect your ability to get Invisalign, either. For example, if you have multiple fillings, dental crowns, or even porcelain veneers, it’s usually possible to get Invisalign.

However, restorations for missing teeth may affect your ability to get Invisalign treatment. Patients with dental bridges or dental implants, for example, may not be able to get Invisalign, though this may vary from patient to patient.

To find out if you’re a good candidate, the best option is to consult with Dr. Park or Dr. Kwon at Clear Smile Dental Studio. Contact us online to schedule your appointment in Stamford, CT now.
